Only Fools and Horses: The sad reason David Jason says he will ‘never’ play Del Boy again

Sir David ruled out a comeback in a recent interview

Only Fools and Horses ran for 23 years in total from its debut in 1981 until the final episode in 2003. Since then there was a spin-off prequel in Rock n Chips, but rumours of further reunion episodes and a chance for Del-Boy and Rodney to return to our screens have sadly never come to fruition.

Though the two key actors who most made Only Fools the comedy juggernaut that it is are still around, in David Jason and Nicholas Lyndhurst, it doesn’t look like another reunion episode will ever happen, with Del Boy actor David, 82, ruling out a return.

He explained in a previous interview that following the tragic loss of creator and writer of the show John Sullivan to viral pneumonia in 2011 aged just 64 he could never imagine returning to the character without the magic that John provided to every script.

When asked if he’d reunite with the cast one last time, the actor told The Sun this year: “Don’t tempt me, Satan, get back downstairs where you belong!

“I don’t think so. Basically, the only person I would trust with the script would have been John and because he’s no longer with us, I don’t think anyone comes up to his standard.”

Only Fools and Horses was John Sullivan’s second sitcom after Citizen Smith and the second of many, but it was this second attempt which cemented his name in TV history, using stories he had heard throughout his own to inspire many iconic episodes.
