Clint Eastwood

Listen to Gorillaz’ ‘Clint Eastwood’ from For All Mankind as Miles and Danielle go about their day

I always love it when a TV series not only licenses a cool song for an episode’s soundtrack, but then plays most of that song during it, rather than a 3-second snippet other shows play.

Case in point, the use of the virtual pop band Gorillaz’ ‘Clint Eastwood‘ on the latest episode of the Apple TV+ series For All Mankind this week — For All Mankind, Season 4, Episode 2, “Have a Nice Sol“.

That song began playing right after Miles learns he can’t watch the video sent to him by his family, as the bandwidth is bad and has been for weeks.

Gorillaz’ ‘Clint Eastwood‘ then plays throughout the next couple of minutes as we see Miles and Danielle going about their day, Danielle having a pleasant time while Miles not so much.

Gorillaz’ ‘Clint Eastwood’ was the band’s debut single

One of the many things that is cool about the English band Gorillaz is that it is not a band made up of people per se.

Instead, the band comprises four “virtual” musicians who were created by Blur frontman Damon Albarn and comic book creator and illustrator Jamie Hewlett.

Gorillaz’ first single ‘Clint Eastwood‘ was the debut release from their self-titled first album, with vocals provided by American rapper Del the Funky Homosapien alongside Albarn in the chorus.

Because the rapper is not always available, however, if ‘Clint Eastwood’ is performed live, other rappers fill in and take his place.

The song is so funky, catchy and upbeat, it became a big hit for the virtual band ranking at #4 on the UK Singles chart, then climbing high up charts in 17 other countries, including the United States where it ranked high on three charts, including the Billboard Hot 100.

Gorillaz’ ‘Clint Eastwood‘ also spawned several remix versions, and an animated music video that was nominated for several awards.

Since its release on the streaming platform in 2016, the video has had over 715 million plays on YouTube alone.

Listen to Gorillaz’ ‘Clint Eastwood‘ as played throughout so much of For All Mankind this week in that video, and via Spotify where the song currently has almost 720 million streams.

Be warned though, you play it once and it will then be bouncing around your head long after.
