Wilson Combat SFT9 (Solid Frame Trak 9mm) 1911 Handgun
The Wilson Combat Solid Frame Trak 9mm (SFT9) 1911 pistol is a beauty built on the Commander platform.
Since Jeff Cooper published his tome “Cooper on Handguns” in 1974, there have been countless variations of the 1911 pistol. Wilson Combat, a leader in both handguns and long custom guns, has a rather neat 1911 variant called the SFT9—Solid Frame Trak 9mm. This model is built on a Commander platform and chambered for the 9mm.
Its combination of a one-piece aluminum frame and a steel slide puts the balance right at the grip. Sights are combat in design and rugged. The rear assembly is secured with dual Allen screws for windage adjustment only, and its U-shape notch is angled slightly forward and serrated against glare. The rear of the slide is also cut at 40 lines per inch, further reducing glare.
The front sight is attached via a dovetail and contains a bright red fiber-optic insert. Sight radius is six inches.
The top of the slide is rounded and also serrated at 30 lpi to combat glare. The slide is stainless steel that’s finished in black DLC with polished flats.
The gun’s match-grade barrel is 4.25 inches long with a fluted chamber. The feed ramp is highly polished. Barrel and bushing are cut flush, and the barrel has a reverse crown. The fitting of the slide to the frame is what you’ve come to expect from Wilson—machine-perfect.
There is no grip safety, which I think is a great idea for a defense gun. The thumb safety, magazine release and hammer are all Wilson’s excellent Bullet Proof parts. The slide stop is countersunk and extended. The beavertail is just the right size and rounded off for shooter comfort.
The trigger is a medium-length three-hole design, and it comes from the factory with a 3.5- to 4.5-pound pull. The trigger on my sample broke at 4.25 pounds.
The frontstrap and arched mainspring housing feature the company’s Trak texture. This consists of a series of raised blocks, which combined with the textured side panels make the gun a pleasure to shoot.
The SFT9 is a double-stack 1911, and the magazine holds 15 rounds. The entire frame is CNC machined from a solid block of T6-7075 aluminum, and despite the high capacity, the grip is only 1.15 inches thick, making it a great concealed carry option. The gun really feels like it was custom-made for you.
Custom options include Wilson’s Armor-Tuff finish, ambidextrous thumb safety and a variety of different sights—along with different trigger pad lengths. The gun comes with an accuracy guarantee of 1.5 inches at 25 yards, and base price is $3,345.
