Only Fools and Horses: David Jason’s hilarious holiday prank on wife Gill that’s the ‘most romantic thing he’s done’ in 17-year marriage
The Del Boy actor pulled out all the stops with this one
As Del Boy in Only Fools and Horses, Sir David Jason very rarely came across as much of a romantic, the wheeling and dealing market trader more interested in making his million and picking up girls at bars than settling down, although he does eventually do exactly that with long-time on and off girlfriend Raquel.
In real life David is much more of the settle down type, having two long-term relationships. First with welsh actor Myfanwy Talog from 1977 until 1993 when she tragically died from breast cancer, and then with his current wife Gill Hinchcliffe, who he tied the knot with back in 2005.
In their years together David, 82, and Gill, 61, have only grown closer, they had a daughter, Sophie Mae, 21, before they married in 2001 and they live together in Buckinghamshire these days. In a recent interview David revealed the most romantic thing he ever did for Gill, involving a secret trip abroad during a break from Only Fools filming.

Speaking to You magazine back in 2018, the actor was asked what the most romantic thing he’s ever done is, to which he recalled: “Secretly planning a weekend trip to New York during a break from filming an Only Fools and Horses Christmas special. I told Gill she was going to Weston-super-Mare!”
In the same interview David also shared the secret which keeps their relationship as healthy as it is, putting it simply: “Give and take. My wife Gill says a happy wife means a happy life!”
The couple first met when David was acting in A Touch of Frost, with Gill working as a production assistant at the time. David recalled the meeting in a 2013 Guardian interview, saying: “I first set eyes on Gill, a floor assistant at [a TV studio] in Leeds, when she was sent to meet me in the studio car park.
“She was 20 years younger, we were living in different parts of the country, and I was still numb with grief. Yet work kept bringing us together and fondness turned to love.”
