Only Fools and Horses and Coronation Street star to be new Countdown host

The comedian and TV presenter will be the perfect antidote to the tricky words and numbers game

With Anne Robinson stepping down as Countdown host after 265 episodes, fans have been waiting to find out who will take the spot on Channel Four’s legendary show. Co-presenters Susie Dent and Rachel Riley are going nowhere, but bosses have revealed one very famous new main presenter.

Les Dennis of Coronation Street fame will take to the helm, as everyone from Joe Public to the hottest celebrities have a crack at word and number rounds. Dennis has form on the show that made him famous – Family Fortunes. The Liverpudlian funny-man made his name from the 80s to the early 2000s.

The actor has been a TV hit on shows like The Bill and Casualty, as well as a becoming a runner-up on series two of Celebrity Big Brother. Amanda Holden’s ex isn’t shy of the stage either and is set to star as Granddad in an upcoming theatre production of Only Fools and Horses.

But, it might be one of TV’s best loved soaps the actor is most widely known for. Dennis starred in Coronation Street from 2014-16 as Michael Rodwell, before he was killed off with a heart attack and left for dead by a love rival and the show’s villain Pat Phelan. Things have been pretty quiet in the years since with a few TV flops, so a stint on Countdown will be a relief for the 68-year-old.

Taking to Twitter to announce his new role, Les wrote: “From 4th August until 15th I shall be hosting the iconic C4Countdown. It is such an honour. Hope you enjoy.” It comes after Anne Robinson quit the Channel 4 show amid tension between herself and Rachel Riley on set.

Dennis is taking the reigns during August, but Colin Murray is filling in for Robinson until the end of the year. Reacting to his new gig, Murray said: “Colin tweeted: “I’m like the assistant manager, given the job until end of season. Earn respect of dressing room, get some points on the board, try to win a trophy! 75 games to get it right! Absolute honour. Fav show ever. July 14 to start of Nov.”
