Only Fools’ Del Boy would have struggled to pay his Peckham rent in 2023 as estate agent reveals staggering cost

Their humble abode on the Peckham estate would cost a staggering amount in present times

Apart from Buckingham Palace, the Trotter’s flat from Only Fools and Hoses has to be one of London’s most famous residences. Their iconic home in the fictional Nelson Mandela House, Nyrere Estate, Peckham, was positioned on the 12th floor and was built in 1960.

Only Fools and Horses was launched on the BBC back in 1981 and followed the trial and tribulations of the Trotter family living on a Peckham council estate. The three-bedroom South London flat was home to wheeler-dealer Del Boy Trotter (David Jason), his younger brother Rodney (Nicholas Lyndhurst), and their Grandad (Lennard Pearce).

Following the death of Grandad, his brother Uncle Albert (Buster Merryfield) cheekily moved in before Raquel Turner (Tessa Peake-Jones) also joined as Del’s better half. Raquel and Del later welcomed their son Damien Trotter into the world making the Trotters’ flat a real family home.

Del Boy always dreamed of becoming a millionaire and during the Time On Our Hands episode in 1996, the Trotter family found their fortune in the form of an antique watch that sold for a whopping £6.2 million.

It was a fairy tale ending for the Trotters as they finally became millionaires and splashed the cash on fancy property, holidays, and cars. Of course, Del then lost all of his money after investing it in the Central American stock market – which crashed leaving him skint and moving back to Peckham.

Fast forward to present times and Peckham is fast becoming a business hub and a hot spot for nightlife, making it the perfect location for buyers working in the city. Plus it has a busy high street, loads of places to eat and drink and a train service that gets you into Central London within 10 minutes.

How much would the Trotters’ flat in Peckham would be worth today?

According to Foxtons, the price of a three-bedroom property in Peckham currently ranges between £358,000 and £802,000 giving an average of £580,000. The average rental price in Peckham for a three-bedroom property is £796 per week. This means the Trotters could expect to pay around £3,449 per month in rent over 12 months when averaging out the 52 weeks in the year.

Back in 1981, the Trotters would have been paying around £150 rent for the three-bed flat, per month. So if Del Boy was selling hooky goods down at the market today, he’d need to sell more than a few dodgy back massagers to cover his rent!

Or, if Del Boy bought the property, and sold it in 2023, he would have earned a fortune, “Bonnet de douche!”.
