Only Fools and Horses Del Boy star Sir David Jason reveals his favourite episode and most fans would agree

The actor said if he could only keep one episode - it would be this one

Acting legend David Jason revealed his favourite ever episode of his iconic sitcom Only Fools and Horses. He starred as Derek ‘Del Boy’ Trotter on the show for more than two decades.

Out of a total 64 episodes, where he starred alongside Nicholas Lyndhurst, he shared the one episode he would absolutely save if he “could only keep one”. Agonising over the answer, David said he loved ‘The Jolly Boys’ Outing’, the Christmas special of season six.

The show saw Del Boy and the gang head off on a road trip to the quintessential seaside town of Margate, but as per usual things didn’t quite go as planned. What clinched the deal for the actor was the “exploding coach”, as well as highlighting the sequence where Harry Nilsson’s song ‘Everybody’s Talkin’ played as the characters boarded the bus.

LADBible reported the actor said the whole thing was “sheer fun” which added to the magic of the show. David said: “For me, the magic of Only Fools is compressed into this single sequence… the gang of friends that the cast had become, and the sheer fun of it all. And so many of those faces no longer with us, of course.

“Nowadays the glimpse of John Challis reaching across to swipe my hat off is so poignant that I practically have to close my eyes, and the whole thing is a world that’s gone. So if someone were to ask me to sum up what, at its very best, it felt like to be in the cast of Only Fools And Horses, I would tell them to watch that sequence.”

John Challis, who played Boycie, died of cancer in September 2021 after a diagnosis back in 2019. He passed just a few days after Only Fools and Horses celebrated its 40th anniversary.

The Radio Times commissioned a poll at the time for fans to vote for their favourite scene in the entire show. Taking the crown was the iconic and hilarious moment when Del Boy fell through the bar during the first episode (‘Yuppy Love’) of the sixth season from 1989.

David spoke to the publication about its win, expressing his delight. He told them: “I am thrilled that the falling through the bar scene has given so much pleasure over the years and thank the RadioTimes.com readers for their vote.

“The show seems to go from strength to strength and I feel very fortunate to have been involved with such an iconic show. It started with the great John Sullivan for the fantastic scripts and the chemistry of the cast which brought it all to life. So many laughs over so many years.”
