That '70s Show

Every Character Who Joined The Circle In That ‘70s Show (Outside Of The Gang)

Outside of the main teenagers, That '70s Show had numerous characters visit The Circle from time to time, including rockstar Alice Cooper.

The Circle in That ‘70s Show featured numerous visitors from characters outside of the gang. While Hyde, Eric, Kelso, Fez, Donna, and Jackie all frequently joined The Circle throughout That ‘70s Show, the gang would sometimes invite in some unexpected characters as they engaged in a notable 1970s counterculture pastime. Even though That ‘70s Show’s The Circle typically took place in the Formans’ basement, character groups would “free their minds” in other locations as well.

Since That ‘70s Show was a prime-time cable sitcom in the late ‘90s, the show had to find clever loopholes to avoid censorship on some significant illicit activities of the depicted era. One such pastime That ‘70s Show included as a reference to the gang’s 1970s counterculture was the casual smoking of marijuana. However, That ‘70s Show couldn’t depict the teens smoking weed on camera so as to avoid setting a bad example, so the creators came up with a clever way to include this cultural activity without being censored by the network. Thus, “The Circle” was born, which would depict That ‘70s Show’s characters sitting in a circle with smoke in the background as the camera moved from intoxicated character to character, emulating the passing of a joint. The creativity behind The Circle led it to be That ‘70s Show’s most memorable gag, especially due to the many euphemisms the sitcom used to refer to drug-related activities and paraphernalia.

Including a few inanimate objects like Fatso the Clown or animals like Kitty’s dog Schatzi, many characters from That ‘70s Show partook in The Circle outside of the main gang. Certain characters joined accidentally, but others would grow to have a frequent presence as they became closer with That ‘70s Show’s main teenager characters. Here’s a breakdown of every character outside of Eric, Hyde, Kelso, Jackie, Donna, and Fez who joined The Circle in That ‘70s Show.

Red Forman

Kurtwood Smith as Red in That '70s Show

Red Forman parking in The Circle was certainly an accident, but it ended up being one of the best moments of That ‘70s Show. In That ‘70s Show‘s season 2 episode “Garage Sale,” Hyde made two batches of brownies, one of which was “special” and the other of which was left normal. After the Formans’ garage sale, Kitty and Red took what they thought was the “normal” batch of brownies into the garage with Midge and Bob Pinciotti, after which That ‘70s Show’s parents enjoyed a long-lasting high. Red’s turn in The Circle included the character pondering the word “hop,” going on about Peter Rabbit, and accidentally selling Eric’s Vista Cruiser. Red would join Hyde in The Circle again in That ’70s Show season 8, but this time he wouldn’t actually be partaking in drugs. However, it was in a sauna where he was illegally attempting to sell his heart medication to two men at the Viking Lodge.

Kitty Forman

When Kitty grabbed Hyde’s brownies in That ‘70s Show season 2, she had no way of knowing they were laced with pot, which is why she took them to celebrate with the Pinciottis. Kitty’s time in The Circle saw her discuss how much she liked fruitcake, with That ‘70s Show’s character’s iconic laugh becoming more pronounced while high. Kitty would get high again in That ‘70s Show season 8, although this time was on purpose. After raiding the basement and finding Hyde and Eric’s stashes, Kitty decided to test it out for herself by hotboxing her bathroom. Of course, Red caught her, which led to a stern reprimanding in the kitchen that she had been used to giving to Eric.

Bob Pinciotti

Bob from That '70s Show in The Circle

The first time Bob Pinciotti joins The Circle in That ‘70s Show is during season 2 with Kitty and Red, as they unintentionally get high off of Hyde’s pot brownies. However, Bob and Midge would later reveal that this wasn’t a one-time occurrence. When Hyde is arrested for possession at the end of That ‘70s Show season 2, Midge mentions how she and Bob had to go all the way across town on multiple occasions to buy pot. Don Stark’s Bob Pinciotti would join Kelso, Fez, and Hyde in The Circle again in That ‘70s Show season 2 at his hunting cabin, though it’s unclear why he let the teens smoke with him. The teens were all telling Bob how much they were infatuated with Midge, which may be part of why he didn’t join a Circle with them again.

Midge Pinciotti

Midge from That '70s Show in The Circle

The only time that Midge Pinciotti joins The Circle in That ‘70s Show is during the season 2 episode “Garage Sale.” Like the rest of the parents, Midge didn’t actually know she was eating pot brownies before getting high. However, Midge would later confirm that she and Bob smoked marijuana on their own time, That ‘70s Show just never depicted the Pinciotti parents in their own Circle.

Randy Pearson

That '70s Show's Randy in The Circle at Grooves

Outside of the gang, the widely-hated Randy Pearson is one of the most frequent That ‘70s Show characters to appear in The Circle. Randy was introduced in That ‘70s Show season 8 as a replacement for Eric and Kelso, as Topher Grace and Ashton Kutcher had both departed the series. As such, Randy became a new member of the gang during That ‘70s Show’s last season, which meant joining in on their favorite activity from time to time. Randy’s time in The Circle took place either at Groove’s or Eric Forman’s basement, although he and Eric never actually met in That ‘70s Show.

Leo

Tommy Chong as Leo in That '70s Show

Unsurprisingly, Leo has been part of quite a few of the gang’s Circles in That ‘70s Show. Leo is Point Place’s resident hippie stoner, with Leo’s actor Tommy Chong also being notable for the same reputation during this era. The first time Leo joins The Circle is during That ‘70s Show season 2 when he watches the sky with Kelso, Hyde, and Fez. Leo’s first appearance in That ‘70s Show featured him getting high with Hyde at the Fotohut, but the episode never showed the two in The Circle. Leo would also join in on The Circle with Donna and Jackie during That ‘70s Show season 4, which saw the three “groovify and beautify.” When Leo was made a more prominent character in That ‘70s Show season 8, he would be seen in The Circle multiple times at Grooves.

Laurie Forman

Laurie in The Circle in That '70s Show

Eric’s older sister Laurie Forman only joins The Circle on two occasions during That ‘70s Show, but she was the subject of conversation during the gang’s activity numerous times. Laurie was first seen in The Circle during That ‘70s Show’s season 2 episode “Moon Over Point Place,” which also included Hyde, Donna, and Jackie discussing whether Laurie was a “homewrecker.” Lisa Robin Kelly’s character would return to The Circle in That ‘70s Show season 5’s Thanksgiving episode, where Laurie, Donna, Jackie, and Ms. McGee discussed Kelso.

Carol McGee

Ms. McGee in The Circle in That '70s Show

Another of That ‘70s Show’s characters to only join The Circle one time was Ms. McGee, Eric’s math teacher who Kelso brought to Thanksgiving dinner. After dinner at the Formans’, Carol went up to Laurie’s room with the girls where they all talked about dating Ashton Kutcher’s Michael Kelso – except Donna. Following That ‘70s Show’s season 5 episode, Ms. McGee wouldn’t be seen on the sitcom again.

Mitch Miller

Seth Green as Mitch in That '70s Show

Eric’s arch-nemesis Mitch Miller (Seth Green) visits The Circle during That ‘70s Show season 6, which sees the entire gang and Mitch play Truth or Dare. Mitch dared himself to kiss Donna, which marked the character’s last time in The Circle. Mitch’s time joining the gang in their favorite activity also broke a record for the most people in The Circle at one time, as his presence brought the total up to seven.

Mr. Wilkinson

The Who's Roger Daltrey in That '70s Show

Portrayed by The Who’s Roger Daltrey, Mr. Wilkinson was Fez’s British music teacher who despised him, with the gang eventually giving him payback by TP’ing his house. Wilkinson only appeared during That ‘70s Show’s musical episode, with the music teacher joining in The Circle where he enjoyed a “bloody brilliant” American cheeseburger. Roger Daltrey was one of the only 1970s celebrity cameos on That ‘70s Show who also joined The Circle with the gang.

Roy

Roy crying in The Circle in That '70s Show

Roy (Jim Gaffigan), who would soon become a recurring character in That ‘70s Show seasons 5 and 6, was first introduced when Hyde and Jackie bumped into him at the job fair. Having been Hyde’s “big brother” when his dad first left, Hyde let Roy join in The Circle with him while still at the job fair. Feeling bad for Roy as he cried during The Circle (which is against the rules), Hyde agreed to take a job in the kitchen at the Holiday Hotel. Roy would then join The Circle another time with Hyde, Kelso, and Eric after a shift at the hotel.

Andrew

Justin Long as Andrew in That '70s Show

Justin Long notably cameoed in That ‘70s Show season 8 as Andrew, Fez’s friend from his mysterious home country. While Andrew spent most of his That ‘70s Show episode antagonizing Jackie, he also partook in The Circle after bringing a new stash as a “gift” for the gang. At the end of the session, Hyde became so high that he began imagining his own face on the other characters, including Andrew.

Samantha

Samantha in That '70s Show Season 8

While Samantha becomes an important character in That ‘70s Show season 8 as Hyde’s wife, she only joined The Circle one time. When Samantha first moved to Point Place, she and Jackie hated each other, so Donna tried breaking the ice by having the three partake in The Circle. This would be one of the only times that The Circle took place at Donna’s house, as the gang was used to doing this activity next door in Eric Forman’s basement.

Coach Ferguson

Coach Ferguson in The Circle in That '70s Show

During That ‘70s Show‘s season 4 episode “Tornado Prom,” the gang goes into lockdown due to a storm, which leaves them with very few activities. Hyde, Kelso, and Jackie go into Coach Ferguson’s office where the teacher joins them in The Circle. While high, Coach Ferguson asks if he and Hyde will still be friends afterward, but the teen rejects this notion.

Jerry Thunder

Jerry Thunder in That '70s Show

While Point Place’s celebrity Jerry Thunder didn’t smoke with That ‘70s Show’s teens, he was featured in a fairly memorable Circle. At the end of That ‘70s Show’s season 3 episode “Radio Daze,” radio DJ Jerry Thunder partakes in The Circle while playing Dungeons & Dragons. With him in The Circle are the station manager and rockstar Alice Cooper.

Max

Donna’s boss at Point Place’s radio station also engages in The Circle during That ’70s Show season 3. Alongside Jerry Thunder and Alice Cooper, Max smokes marijuana while playing Dungeons & Dragons. This is one of the only times that The Circle features only guest characters with none of That ’70s Show‘s main cast.

Alice Cooper

Alice Cooper in That '70s Show

Alongside Roger Daltrey, Alice Cooper is the only other 1970s-era celebrity to cameo on That ‘70s Show and join The Circle. While he had previously appeared in Eric’s dream, Alice Cooper ended up playing D&D while smoking with Jerry Thunder and Max. Alice Cooper would also be the only celebrity playing themselves on That ‘70s Show to appear in The Circle.

Jill

Hyde's Date Jill in That '70s Show

When Hyde, Kelso, Fez, and Topher Grace’s Eric decide to have a guy’s night in That ‘70s Show season 4, Hyde ruins it by inviting a girl. Not only does Jill crash their bowling night, but she also steals Eric’s spot during The Circle. Eric walks in and kicks Jill out after she and Hyde start making out, calling her “Yoko Ono” as she leaves.

Theo

Leo's cousin Theo in That '70s Show

Leo’s cousin Theo also joins The Circle in That ‘70s Show season 4. After Kitty hired him to redo the basement, Theo went down to assess the area and ended up smoking with Eric, Hyde, and Kelso. As Leo’s cousin, Theo joining The Circle in That ‘70s Show came as no surprise.

The Angel

Wayne Knight as Angel in That '70s Show

When experiencing his own life-changing It’s a Wonderful Life experience, The Angel (Wayne Knight) takes Eric into an alternate timeline in the 1980s. At Hyde and Donna’s wedding, Eric, Hyde, Kelso, Jackie, and The Angel get high off of Kelso’s “wedding present.” At the end of The Circle, The Angel remarks that this is one of the things he truly misses about Earth.

Charlie

While it’s unclear if the characters actually smoked weed on this occasion, Charlie engaged in The Circle during That ’70s Show season 7 after joining the gang. Charlie brought Hyde, Eric, Fez, and Kelso to his dad’s beer warehouse, where each of the boys drank straight from their own kegs. While Charlie may not have joined in on the typical activity during The Circle, his time on That ’70s Show would come to an end when he died doing another of the gang’s pastimes: falling off the water tower.
