Only Fools and Horses

The Only Fools and Horses legends who were nowhere to be seen in the first episode

We cannot believe some of these characters showed up so late in the show

The first episode of Only Fools and Horses introduced us to cheeky chappy Del Boy and his little brother Rodney. We also met Grandad and Trigger; we were even introduced to The Nag’s Head.

But some of the most legendary Only Fools and Horses characters were introduced later in the series. Boycie added a little bit of competition to the show, always trying to one up Del Boy, and Denzil was always getting himself in trouble around the Trotters.

It is hard to imagine the show without them. Here are all of the Only Fools and Horses legends who were nowhere to be seen in episode one – but who definitely made their mark on the TV sitcom.

Boycie

Second-hand car dealer Boycie (John Challis) is drawn into the chaos of Del’s antics in the second episode of the first season of Only Fools and Horses. In ‘Go West Young Man’, Del decides he wants to get into the second-hand car trade and buys an old Ford Cortina for £25 from Boycie. He soon realises that – like himself – Boycie is not exactly a reliable salesman.

Mickey

Rodney’s useless friend Mickey Pearce (Patrick Murray) makes his first appearance in season three, episode two,. In ‘Healthy Competition’, Rodney leaves Trotters Independent Traders to build a business with Mickey and (surprise, surprise) things do not go to plan.

Denzil

Paul Barber as Denzil in Only Fools and Horses

Denzil Tulser (Paul Barber) is one of two characters who made their first appearance in the penultimate episode of season three. The long-distance Liverpool lorry driver falls victim to one of Del’s schemes in “Who’s a Pretty Boy?” Del persuades pal Denzil to let the Trotters redecorate his flat – with hilariously disastrous results.

Mike

The drama did not stop with Denzil in episode seven of season three. After the disastrous decorating attempt Del heads for a drink at the Nag’s Head and meets the pub’s new landlord, Mike Fisher (Kenneth MacDonald). The Trotters convince Mike to pay them £2,000 to redecorate the pub.

Uncle Albert

Uncle Albert (Buster Merryfield) filled a gap left by Grandad when Lennard Pearce passed away in December 1984. He joined the show in the second episode of series four, ‘Strained Relationships.’ Del and Rodney meet Albert at Grandad’s funeral and decide to let him stay with them after he is abandoned by his nephew Stan and wife Jean.

Marlene

Marlene Boyce (Sue Holderness) is mentioned a few times by her husband Boycie before making her first on-screen appearance in season four, episode four. In ‘Sleeping Dogs Lie’, Del and Rodney babysit Marlene and Boycie’s new puppy Duke – who turns out to be a bit of a nightmare.

Raquel

Del’s love interest Raquel made quite the first impression in the seventh Only Fools and Horses Christmas special. The couple meet through a local dating agency but run into one another again when Raquel turns up as a stripper for Uncle Albert’s birthday party.

After storming out, Del changes his mind and goes to meet Raquel before she leaves the country. However, he gets stopped by the police and does not make it in time. Raquel is left heartbroken.

Cassandra

Cassandra became a big part of the show as Rodney’s wife but she did not make her first appearance until the first episode of season six. In ”Yuppy Love’, the couple meet at an adult education class and Rodney accidentally takes Cassandra’s coat.

They meet later at a disco and dance before Cassandra offers to drive Rodney home. Rodney is embarrassed of Nelson Mandela house and so asks to be dropped off in a posh part of town before walking home in the rain.
