Ashton Kutcher Reveals Why He And Mila Kunis Returned For That ’70s Show Spinoff
Ashton Kutcher opened up about why he and his wife Mila Kunis decided to return to Netflix's That '70s Show spinoff titled That '90s Show.
Not too long from now, audiences will see everyone’s favorite TV stoner group from That ’70s Show when That ’90s Show debuts on Netflix. Now, Ashton Kutcher has revealed why he and his wife, former co-star Mila Kunis, decided to return to the show.
Back during the premiere of his new movie Vengeance, Kutcher voiced how much he enjoyed coming back to play Kelso in the That ’70s Show spinoff. Kutcher also vocalized how weird it was to be back on set, but it was still fun nonetheless for him and Kunis to go back to their stomping grounds, especially since they were with people who they had worked with before.
“It was really nostalgic to be back on the set,” Kutcher told Variety. “It’s all the same folks that made That ’70s Show, so it was pretty bizarre.” Kutcher also admitted that he and Kunis needed time to think about whether to come back and ultimately had fun once they did. “Mila and I were contemplating it,” Kutcher said. “We thought, ‘Listen, we’re only in the position that we’re in because of that show, so let’s just go back and do this. We just went back and had fun for a week. It was so random and fun.” Better yet, it sounds as though Kutcher believes the spinoff will be well-received. “It’s really funny. The new cast is phenomenal.”
Everyone from the original cast sans Danny Masterson – because of his ongoing legal issues – will be involved in some form when That ’90s Show debuts. While Kurtwood Smith and Debra Jo Rupp have starring roles as their original characters, Red and Kitty Forman, respectively, Kutcher, Kunis, Topher Grace, Laura Prepon, and Wilmer Valderrama will only return in guest roles as their original characters for the show. That said, time will tell if that’s all it will be long-term should the show take off.
On the one hand, there’s a very strong possibility that That 90’s Show will be popular given the fact that it’s a reboot of a hit show that started airing two and a half decades ago. Given that reboots are popping up left and right, there’s no reason to think this particular reboot won’t take to audiences. Especially since, instead of picking up right where it left off like other reboots have, That ’90s Show is, well, obviously going to take place at a different time from when That ’70s Show ended.
That will all depend on how this new cast shakes out. That ’70s Show thrived because the character dynamics worked so well within the cast. Since the original younger cast members have only now been reduced to guest roles, the show will depend on the dynamics of the new cast to keep up the quality of its predecessor. Remember, That ’70s Show badly declined when Grace and Kutcher left in 2005 because they lost their straight man as well as a good portion of their comic relief. For them to avoid faltering like that, That ’90s Show will need all hands on deck to have a chance at having the success That ’70s Show did.
