Why Clint Eastwood Turned Down the Role of James Bond

Imagine Clint Eastwood being James Bond. Could you see the sharp chin, grin, and smile from Eastwood as the famed 007? It almost happened. He almost stepped into the part made famous by Sean Connery. It would have been cool to see if he could have pulled it off. This did not happen. What made Eastwood not take up the role in the first place? He had a lot of respect for Connery.

Becoming 007 Almost Happened For Clint Eastwood In His Career

“I was also offered pretty good money to do James Bond if I would take on the role,” Eastwood said in an article from Hero Complex. “This was after Sean Connery left. My lawyer represented the Broccolis [who produce the Bond franchise], and he came and said, ‘They would love to have you.’ But to me, well, that was somebody else’s gig. That’s Sean’s deal. It didn’t feel right for me to be doing it.”

Sounds good to me. At the time, Connery was making his suave, debonair agent into a movie theater owner’s best friend. People loved to see how James Bond would get out of trouble in a number of different movies. Would you believe that this was not the only big-time movie Clint Eastwood was asked to appear in as the lead role? He had a shot at being Superman. Let’s let Eastwood talk about that situation.

Movie Star Almost Became ‘Man of Steel’ As Well In Movies

“I can remember – and this was many years ago – when [Warner Bros. President] Frank Wells came to me about doing Superman,” Eastwood said. “So it could have happened. This was when they first started to think about making it. I was like, ‘Superman? Nah, nah, that’s not for me.’ Not that there’s anything wrong with it. It’s for somebody, but not me.” As we all know, Christopher Reeves took on the role and became the modern movie “Man of Steel.”

Clint Eastwood happens to be one of those actors who initially found success on TV. Does the name Rowdy Yates ring a bell? It should. Eastwood played the character on Rawhide and became a household name. But the world of movies would be waiting for him in the future. It would be where Eastwood would make his name stand the test of time. Just look at a long list of Western movies and you will find his name among them.

He’s also branched out beyond acting to be a movie director and producer. Eastwood has found his niche and doubled down on the processes. Also, Academy Award wins have come his way, too. It turns out that he didn’t need to become 007 because he had a character like “Dirty Harry” to hang his hat on for a long, long time.
