Once Upon a Time Nearly Used a Prop From Robin Williams’ Hook

Once Upon A Time actor Colin O'Donoghue revealed he almost got to use the hook prop from Robin Williams' Hook for his portrayal of Captain Hook.

Once Upon a Time seems like it was a long time ago, but Colin O’Donoghue remembers the day he almost got to use a handy prop from Robin Williams’ Hook.

Captain Hook actor O’Donoghue told TVLine that he almost got to use the hook from Dustin Hoffman’s portrayal of the seafaring pirate. “One of the things that stands out from early on was that I actually tried to use the hook from Dustin Hoffman’s movie,” said O’Donoghue. “We were considering using that hook, but the one that he actually wore is massive, because his costume and everything was so flamboyant and so big.”

O’Donoghue revealed that ABC was going a different route with their portrayal of Captain Hook — a version that involved lots of heavy eyeliner, “black leather and an open blouse.” “I hadn’t realized there was going to be that much [‘guyliner’], and that it was going to become such a thing,” O’Donoghue recalled. “I think people are very disappointed when they meet me or see pictures of me without any eyeliner on now. In [Disney+’s] The Right Stuff, I don’t have a beard and I’ve got like a 12-year-old boy haircut, so I think I look pretty different!”

ABC very quickly promoted Captain Hook from a recurring character to a series regular, and O’Donoghue knew very early on how he wanted to portray Emma Swan’s love interest. “I had a very specific idea as to how I would play him, and [showrunners] Eddie [Kitsis] and Adam [Horowitz] were on the same page from the get-go,” O’Donoghue said. “I just made an innuendo about anything that I could — that was part and parcel of what he was — but I knew I could do it in a cheeky way so that you could kind of get away with it.”

“I wanted him to be somebody that guys would want to be and girls would want to be with but knew that he was bad news,” he added. “That’s what I wanted him to be like, early on — very much the charming bad boy.”

Created by Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz, Once Upon A Time was a live-action series that followed the adventures of iconic characters from fairy tales, mythology and classic literature who found themselves trapped in the real world. The show concluded its seven-season run in 2018.
