Only Fools and Horses

The Only Fools and Horses star who is now a passionate campaigner for hedgehogs

The actor is a patron for the British Hedgehog Preservation Society

Only Fools and Horses legend, John Challis, is best known for his iconic role as Boycie in the hit show.

However, in his personal life the actor has spent many years dedicating his time to ensuring the preservation of one of the UK’s best-loved mammals, Hedgehogs.

The cute creatures spend most of their time sleeping, but due to loss of habitat and food, they are under threat.

Some people even consider the prickly animals useful pets because they prey on many common garden pests.

In real life John is far from his character Boycie, who in the show is snooty and ostentatious.

The actor has taken part in many projects to raise awareness for the protection of the little creatures.

He is a patron for the British Hedgehog Preservation Society , and has said on their website: “I am honoured to have been asked to become a patron of the BHPS. It is essential that these endearing animals are protected.

“I am lucky enough to have quite a few hedgehogs in my garden; and I welcome them as allies in the war against slug and snail!”

John is one of many famous faces who are a patron for the society, where others include Ben Fogle, Twiggy and Ann Widdecombe.

The Only Fools and Horses icon is also patron of Cuan Wildlife Rescue, for whom he helped launch Hedgehog Awareness Week last year.

The star features in a YouTube video where he reads the children’s story “Bear, The Hedgehog Who Lost His Prickles”, which is about a special hedgehog who was one of the organisation’s patients.
