ITV A Touch of Frost: How David Jason became a dad at age of 61 and married at 65

David Jason is a well-known TV legend.

Appearing on shows such Only Fools and Horses, A Touch of Frost and Open All Hours, the 81-year-old has carved his name in history as being one of the greats.

However, you may not know that David became a father for the first time at the age of 61.

In 2001 David and his then future-wife Gill Hincliffe, who was 41-years-old at the time, welcomed their daughter Sophie Mae Jason.

Speaking about becoming a dad at an older age, Jason said in a 2019 interview with the Telegraph: “I suppose the thing that you miss, perhaps, is being able to do all the things a younger father would do with their child.

“But Sophie is lovely – when she was a baby and a small child, she was so funny, it was sheer delight. I still call her ‘the warf’, because she loved Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, but she couldn’t say the ‘D’. Even now, I’ll say, ‘Where’s the warfling?’, and my wife will say, ‘Oh, she’s gone out.'”

David and Gill got married in 2005. They met in 1995 when Gill was working as a TV production assistant at ITV.

Previously, the Only Fools and Horses star had lived with his girlfriend, Welsh actress Myfanwy Talog, for 18 years. However, she sadly died of breast cancer in 1995 at the age of 50.

In an interview with The Telegraph in 2008, Jason joked that he had started to act like his father when parenting.

He said: “My father used to say, ‘What the hell are you listening to? Put that bloody rubbish off.’

“And it was The Beatles, [but Sophie will] be watching Hannah Montana, and I hear myself saying, ‘What’s that rubbish you’re watching?'”

Speaking about how he was told to work less so he could spend more time with his daughter when she was a baby, David added: “I was told by the female department, ‘You must stop this, you’re not spending enough time at home with your small child.’ So now I have two months at least between projects.”

Sophie Mae is now 20-year-old.
