Tom Selleck Finally Addresses One of ‘Blue Bloods’ Fans’ Biggest Questions

Blue Bloods fans have come to know and love Tom Selleck as Frank Reagan, the NYC police commissioner and Reagan family patriarch, over the past 12 years. As much as they fawn over the ‘80s heartthrob in the role, though, they can’t help but want more from his character. Namely, a relationship arc.

As fans are well aware, Frank’s wife, Mary Margaret Reagan, passed away before the first season even aired. Over the years, Frank has had brief flirtations but never a full-fledged relationship — and he’s continued to wear his wedding ring and speak highly of his late wife all the while. This, of course, has led to fans to wonder if a little matchmaking will ever be in the works. And, at long last, we have an answer from Tom himself.

“Frank’s a little senior,” Tom shared in an interview with Parade in 2021. “He’s also still wearing his wedding ring. We’ve never gone into it. Maybe it’s too self-centered a story about the why of all that. He’s pretty much wrapped himself in his work. The hardest thing about it is, especially with someone who is obviously as vulnerable as Frank and probably scared of relationships, you can’t just bring somebody on the show and do an episode about it. It takes a lot of planning. He’s attracted to women all the time, but dating’s a different thing. I don’t know how you get to a date in one episode. They have to hire somebody who’s willing to, No. 1, make a leap of faith, like I did on Friends—there was no script—and have a significant arc. That’s the only way to do it.”

Okay, so it’s less of a direct answer—but it does leave us with hope. Considering Blue Bloods is still such a top-rated show, one can expect that a season 13 is in the pipeline, which means more than a dozen episodes in which a relationship could bloom.
