Only Fools and Horses cameraman ‘had to be replaced’ as he ‘couldn’t control himself’

Only Fools and Horses star Sir David Jason opened up about a moment while filming the iconic sitcom in the 80s in which the cameraman had to be replaced for laughing too much.

The now 81-year-old actor recalled the filming of the comedy from 1981 to 1991 and the moment that the scenes being captured became too much for a cameraman, who had to be replaced due to ‘not being able to control himself’ while on set.

Sir David has said that they would “still be filming now” if they hadn’t taken the action, as the humour of the scene became too much for the cameraman, who began shaking with laughter while filming.

Del Boy and Rodney are entrusted with an urn of ashes

The moment came during an episode from 1982 called Ashes to Ashes, in which Del Boy and brother Rodney Trotter (Nicholas Lyndhurst) were intending to scatter the ashes of Trigger’s (Roger Lloyd Pack) grandfather in the River Thames.

Of course, the plan doesn’t go as smoothly as the pair intended and after setting the urn down at the side of the road, they were horrified to see a road cleaning lorry come past and suck up the urn and the ashes as it passed the pair.

Del and Rodney then chased the lorry on foot, shouting at the driver: “You’ve just sucked up our urn.”

Banging on the side of the lorry, they managed to get the driver’s attention, who promptly brought the vehicle to a halt.

Repeating their position, the driver thinks that said the name “Ern” and responded to the out of breath duo: “Oh my God, what was he? A kitten?”

This moment was enough to leave the cast and crew in hysterics, with one cameraman in particular finding it difficult to focus on his job in hand due to the hilarity of the situation.

As he tried to hide his laughter, Sir David said the cameraman “would get the shakes” and “couldn’t control himself”.

Sir David recalled: “We had to haul out the cameraman and replace him for that shot in the end.”
